The Wim Hof Method is a wellness practice that combines cold exposure and breathing exercises to help people feel more alive and energized.

Its growing popularity isn’t just hype—recent research shows that this practice can truly improve energy, clarity, and stress management.

Putting the Wim Hof Method to the test

A new study in Nature followed more than 400 healthy adults, averaging 37 years old, who tried either the Wim Hof Method or mindfulness meditation daily for a month. The WHM participants were split into two groups: one took ice baths in person, while the other practiced cold showers at home.

During the study, participants tracked their energy, mental clarity, and stress levels. Researchers also measured heart rate, breathing, and sleep.

The results were clear: those practicing the cold exposure breathing practice reported higher energy, sharper minds, and better stress reduction. These benefits were most noticeable right after daily practice.

Comparing methods

While mindfulness meditation helped reduce stress early on, the Wim Hof Method showed steady improvement over time. Participants experienced gradual reductions in stress, alongside enhanced energy and mental clarity throughout the month.

Sleep, cognition, and heart health showed smaller changes, but participants clearly felt stronger and more in control.

Researchers cautioned that the study lasted only 29 days and participants knew which group they were in, which might have influenced results.

Even so, the method’s founder is encouraged by the science. Wim Hof told Fox News Digital, “I felt that this was going to make a huge difference in people. I had a lot of anecdotal evidence, but that doesn’t make it scientific.”

How the Wim Hof Method works

The Wim Hof Method relies on three pillars:

  • Cold
  • Breathing
  • Mindset

Hof explains, “It is a combination of the three … and when they come together, they reinforce each other and become stronger.” He added, “Use the cold well, and you bring the immune system, the energy system and your cardiovascular system to an optimum [state].”

Special breathing is said to lower inflammation, a major driver of disease. Adjusting mindset can help the brain handle stress more efficiently. By lowering stress, people can support long-term health, Hof notes.

A new way to stay healthy

Dr. Jemma King, lead author from the University of Queensland School of Psychology in Australia, began the study with a “healthy dose of scientific skepticism.”

She explained, “People are really anxious, people are really burnt out, and the world is very destabilized at the moment.”

King noted that many people rely heavily on healthcare systems or medication for everyday stress. She saw the cold exposure breathing practice as an alternative, especially for those with “busy brains” who find it hard to sit still.

She said, “If you choose to do small doses of the right kind of stress, it doesn’t break you down. It actually makes you stronger.”

Surprising results

The study also found that the breathing component helps flush toxins from the brain, reducing mental fog and boosting mood and alertness.

Unexpectedly, participants became braver at work, more willing to speak up and face challenges. King observed that stepping into cold water each morning trains people to ignore the inner voice that says “no,” building toughness that spreads into other parts of life.

How to start the Wim Hof Method safely

Hof encourages beginners to start with cold showers at home to activate the heart and energy systems.

“Take the cold shower, go into that breathing, and suddenly you’ll feel an innate power awakening. That is the nervous system, and you have control over that,” he said.

However, cold exposure isn’t safe for everyone. Harvard Health experts warn that those with heart problems or blood flow issues, such as Raynaud’s syndrome, should proceed cautiously and consult a doctor.

For those who are not ready to start with cold exposure, Hof suggests beginning with just the breathing exercises. He explained that breathing trains the nervous system in the same way weightlifting strengthens muscles.

Hof emphasized that anyone can take control of their well-being, saying, “Know that you are built to have willful control over your health, happiness and strength.”
