A couple seeking freedom from rising rent found a solution in a budget-friendly tiny house

Budget-friendly and full of charm, this tiny house became the perfect escape for Franz and Jessi, a young couple fleeing soaring rent.

With just $50,000, they constructed their dream home from the ground up, proving that living small doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort or quality.

Escaping the rent trap

Like many young couples, Franz and Jessi were burdened by escalating rent prices.

In Washington, they paid at least $1,800 monthly for an apartment in a less-than-ideal neighborhood.

This financial strain led them to consider alternative living arrangements.

“We’re going to tell you why it was a good option for us to go tiny instead of renting or buying a house,” Franz explained.

Embracing tiny living

Initially, their visions for the future differed.

Jessi imagined a traditional home with a white picket fence, while Franz envisioned a nomadic lifestyle.

However, they found common ground in the concept of a tiny house.

“God knew, and the tiny house ended up being the perfect merge between our two lifestyles, and we both couldn’t love it more,” Jessi shared.

Building the home themselves not only saved money but also strengthened their relationship.

“It grew us together. Like going through this project, it was really gratifying,” Jessi reflected.

Building a budget-friendly tiny house

Their self-built tiny home, certified as an RV, is legally parked in a welcoming RV community that embraces small-space living.

This setup offers them both mobility and the pride of homeownership.

“That $1,800 that went to rent wasn’t towards something that we owned. So, yeah, we pay $750, but now we have, you know, $1,000 surplus, and in 5 years, that pays off our house,” Franz noted.

The financial freedom has allowed them to focus on saving and creating memorable experiences together.

“There’s so much more peace than our experience with apartment living. You know, you’re just in your home. It’s peaceful. It’s quiet. It’s yours,” Jessi added.

The tiny house measures 30 feet long, 8.5 feet wide, and 11 feet tall at its highest point. They carefully planned the layout to maximize space, ensuring comfort without excess.

The living room, approximately 7 by 7 feet with a 6’8″ ceiling, is a cozy retreat. It features a functional couch with storage and a pull-out bed for guests.

Franz enjoys the space, saying, “I love how it’s at the end of the house. It’s kind of tucked away back here. You have this nice window. It’s a good little nook to kind of just enjoy and come home and relax.”

Spanning over 12 feet, the kitchen is Jessi’s favorite spot.

“We do all the cooking and baking in here; we’ve even done a full Thanksgiving meal, so we definitely don’t feel crammed. I love this kitchen!” she exclaimed.

The kitchen includes a large sink, a two-burner propane cooktop, a propane oven, ample counter space, and a snack bar that doubles as a dining area and workspace.

The master suite, located in a loft, accommodates a king-size bed.

“I’ve never owned a king-size bed until I lived in the tiny house, and it fits the king-size bed. So for sleeping, it is so good,” Franz shared.

An additional loft serves as guest space or storage.

The 7 by 7-foot bathroom features a full-size soaking tub, washer-dryer combo, and his-and-hers closets.

“I love that our bathroom is very just clean and open. Windows on either side and white walls, I think, helped it feel bigger, and it feels like a nice peaceful space to get ready, come decompress after a long day and just feel good,” Jessi described.
