Boy with different colored eyes adopts cat who shares the same condition

It’s always good to have a best friend, and this Oklahoma boy found his in the form of a furry, four-legged creature – a cat with different colored eyes!

Madden Humphreys is just like every regular kid – silly, playful, and energetic. But aside from these typical attributes, there is something about this lad that makes him extraordinary.

Madden has a bilateral cleft lip and a condition called complete heterochromia iridum or in lay man’s term ‘different colored eyes’, which means that his eyes are a different color from each other.

In his case, his right eye is blue and his left eye is green. Celebrities like Mila Kunis, David Bowie, and Keifer Sutherland share the same unique condition.

But what was supposed to be a special quality became a burden to Madden. He was incessantly bullied in school for being different, and he ultimately felt isolated. Everywhere he looked, he couldn’t see anyone who possessed exactly the same traits that he has.

That is until Moon the cat came into his life.

Madden’s mother, Christina Humphreys, shared with Love What Matters the incredible story of how the cat became a part of their lives.

“Last week, a friend posted an image of the cat in our cleft moms group. This kitty was taken in by a rescue group in Minnesota. We knew immediately that this kitty was meant to be part of our family.

Not only does he have a cleft lip like our 7-year-old son Madden, he also has complete heterochromia iridum, like Madden. They were destined to be best friends. Funny how a pet can make you feel less alone.”

Heterochromia iridum is when a person has two different colored eyes — the part of the iris. But in Madden’s case, his eyes are a different color altogether, which classifies it as complete. 

It is a very rare condition, occurring in just less than 1% of the population. Cleft lips, on the other hand, affect an even lesser number of people.

Given these facts, to find someone – much less a cat – with the exact same condition is somewhat incredible.

One couldn’t help but think that this cat was specifically born into this world to be Madden’s best friend, because he shares the exact same unique conditions that he has!

With the help of a few good friends who funded their road trip, the Humphreys were able to travel from Oklahoma to Minnesota to officially adopt the kitty who also has two different colored eyes.

Christina confessed that they weren’t “spontaneous people”, but they knew they were meant to love this cat.

“Moon, the kitty, and Madden are the perfect companions for each other.  In a word full of bullies and hateful words, we will choose to chase love. I think it’s safe to say that this kitty is love, and was certainly meant to be part of our journey and Madden’s journey,” she said.

She says that she is “stunned” at how things turned out, and couldn’t think of any explanation other than fate as to how all this became possible.

With this newfound friendship, Christina wishes that her son realizes one important thing.

“I hope Moon helps Madden realize that being born unique is an incredible thing; that he is magic. These two handsome guys truly are a wonder,” Christina said.

Before Moon came into his life, Madden went viral for an anti-bullying video that celebrates differences and encourages people to be kind. This was made after he was bullied on the school bus.

According to Christina, this unfortunate incident “broke his spirit” at the time, but now, she is confident that having Moon will help increase her son’s confidence.

Madden said in the video: “Don’t be mean to other people that are different. We’ve already been through a lot of hard stuff. Show everybody kindness! You’re missing out on a lot of awesome people if you’re being a poophead to them. If somebody’s being mean to you, be nice to them. Because the most unlovable people need love the most.”
