Jimmy’s custom off-grid truck home began as a dream of independence and a life away from the constraints of modern city living.
For years, he had imagined living off-grid, blending his love for music, craftsmanship, and functional design into a mobile home that would be both beautiful and practical.

“It was a long-term vision and goal; like so many disillusioned with the modern way of sort of city life, I just wanted to live off-grid and been wanting to do it for years,” Jimmy explained.
His goal was more than just moving into a mobile home—he wanted a sanctuary. This space felt like a meditative retreat and a home where every detail reflected care and creativity.
“I wanted a beautiful home. I wanted if I’m going to live in a small space, I just want it beautiful with an energy about it so that when I’m in it, it’s almost like a meditative space and functional as well.”

The story behind the custom off-grid truck home
Jimmy’s journey started with two old lorries. One large truck was used for parts, while the smaller Iveco served as the base for his custom off-grid truck home.
He stripped it down to its bare steel frame, painted it, and extended the height and bedroom space by 18 inches.

“So there’s a wooden structure over the top of the steel frame, the same way that you’d build a house. So it’s all massively overengineered,” he said.
Materials were carefully chosen for quality and durability. African sapeli wood salvaged from the larger truck was used for the walls and cabinetry, creating a warm, natural look.
“This has all been treated with oil but it doesn’t need to be. That’s already 30 years old. There’s no rot on it. It will last me out.”

Drawing inspiration from Scandinavian minimalism, Moroccan and Indian design, and old railway carriages, Jimmy created a home that was both artistic and functional.
His goal was a space that combined beauty with utility, making even a small footprint feel open, calming, and harmonious.
Custom off-grid truck home specifications and features
The custom off-grid truck home sits on a 6.5-ton ex-horsebox truck.

It measures around 20 feet long, just over 7 feet wide, and has an interior height of 8 feet.
Powered by a four-cylinder turbo diesel, it offers fuel efficiency for long journeys while remaining agile enough for narrow roads.
For off-grid living, Jimmy installed a 2.5 kW hybrid battery system using lithium and lead-acid batteries.
One 400 W solar panel powers the home, while a low-EMF electrical setup can be turned off completely at night. “I can kill the whole system at night. There’s no electricity.”

Natural sheep’s wool insulation surrounds the interior, regulating humidity and preventing mold.
All lighting is designed to block harmful blue light, creating a warm, calming atmosphere in the evenings.
“It creates such a mood in the evening to have that gentle light and I’m so used to it now. I’ve been living that way for a few years.”
The total cost of building the truck was around £40,000 ($54,419.99), excluding the two years of Jimmy’s work, research, and painstaking craftsmanship.

Every detail, from reclaimed wood finishes to hand-selected fixtures, reflects his commitment to quality and off-grid living.
Rooms and their functions: Harmony in every corner
Living Area
The main living area emphasizes flow and openness. Curved walls replace harsh lines, and sliding doors maximize usable space.

“The doors, you know, just slide. Nothing opens into the space to infringe on that sense of spaciousness.”
A wood-burning stove imported from New Zealand serves as a focal point. At the same time, lighting is carefully designed to create a peaceful and meditative environment.
Jimmy described the space as “my little cocoon, my little temple, my little church on wheels… it just feels beautiful. I guess it’s cuz I’ve built it.”
Kitchen
The kitchen occupies a central area and functions as both a cooking and workspace.
A four-burner stove sits alongside hidden cabinetry for the fridge and appliances, preserving the clean aesthetic. A skylight brightens the space, and removable poles serve as a drying rack.
“Usually I’ll dry stuff outside when I can, but when it’s wet outside, I just hang stuff up there, put the burner on… and it’s dry in an hour.”
Jimmy prioritized both practicality and wellness in the kitchen. He uses cast-iron cookware, Berkey water filtration, and natural fats like tallow or ghee for cooking.

“No seed oils. None.” Every element contributes to a healthy, functional environment for off-grid living.
Sleeping Area
Above the cab, a fixed full-size double bed provides a cozy retreat. The area includes a removable amethyst pink glass skylight for stargazing.
“I love it up there. I go up there and I’m hobbited in, you know?” Jimmy emphasized the importance of simplicity and comfort, avoiding complex setups that could detract from an efficient, comfortable life in a small space.

Bathroom and Shower
Jimmy decided against permanent bathroom fixtures inside the truck.
A hidden floor shower, handheld kitchen shower, and movable composting toilet allow him to maximize living space without compromising functionality.
“You’re in a shower and loo for what, 10, 15 minutes a day. And why compromise your space for 10 or 15 minutes a day?”

Music and Storage
As a musician, Jimmy built the truck with acoustics and storage in mind. Full-range speakers, high-quality amplifiers, and carefully placed cabinetry create a functional and beautiful environment for music.
“Everything has a place and if it doesn’t have a place, it can’t be in here.”
Storage spaces are integrated throughout the living, kitchen, and sleeping areas, keeping the home organized and clutter-free.

Design philosophy and materials
Jimmy’s mobile home design reflects his love of natural materials, holistic design, and craftsmanship.
Interior walls, cabinets, and flooring are made of cedar, larch, and Douglas fir, finished with Scandinavian lye and natural oils for durability and aesthetics.
The floor can get wet without damage and is easily maintained with a quick scrub or light sanding once or twice a year.

Every design choice, from curved walls to ambient lighting, was carefully selected to create a space that is both functional and inspiring.
“When I do a build, I have a list of priorities… Some of those things had to go and not be included because it would mess with the sense of just spaciousness in here.”
Jimmy describes his design philosophy as combining music, architecture, and natural materials into a cohesive experience.
“Music is liquid architecture; architecture is frozen music.”

Life on the road: How Jimmy’s custom off-grid truck home reflects design and freedom
For Jimmy, the custom off-grid truck home is more than a house on wheels; it is a statement about freedom and life on his own terms.
He spends months traveling, working, and living wherever he finds land, currently planning to stay in Portugal while building a larger home and recording studio.
“I’m going to live in this in Portugal while I build the other home… then I’ll see what happens once that home’s built—whether I keep this or it finds a new home, I haven’t decided yet.”
His approach emphasizes simplicity, independence, and intentional living—principles that guide both his lifestyle and the design of his mobile home.
