Adrien, a single dad raising twins John and Ella, has turned a 2018 Mercedes Sprinter van into a full-time home for his family.
His journey began in a small town where he worked in a factory and on construction jobs, feeling trapped and disconnected.
“Something felt wrong with the world, and I didn’t really fit,” he recalls. “I knew I didn’t fit. It was making me feel down, and something was wrong with life.”
A chance encounter changed everything.

A friend of a friend showed him a map of Nepal and explained plans for a trekking adventure.
“Something just snapped in my mindโฆ ‘You can do that? People can do this sort of thing,'” Adrien says.
That glimpse of freedom inspired him to travel.
He eventually settled in Thailand, built a business, and met a French woman who became his partner.
Their life was quickly upended when complications during her pregnancy claimed her life, leaving Adrien as a single dad raising twins in a foreign country.
“Broke me at the timeโฆ the decision was made to just come back to the UK. It was like, I’m going homeโฆ be close to my family,” he says.
Back in the UK, Adrien tried conventional life. He settled into a house, enrolled the twins in school, and returned to factory work. But it felt wrong.

“I never ever planned to be back in this countryโฆ now I’m stuck doing work I don’t really want to do,” the single dad reflects.
He distanced himself from alcohol, focused on clarity, and started studying the systems that govern daily life.
He realized that it wasnโt him, but the structure of society, that didnโt fit his values.
Traveling with his mother in her motorhome revealed the possibilities of life on the road.
Following the deaths of his mother and sister, Adrien decided life was too short to remain trapped.
He converted his own work van into a home. He pulled the twins from school, embracing home education and a simpler, freer lifestyle.

A van that became a familyโs home and haven
Adrienโs van became their living space eight months ago.
It is a 2018 Mercedes Sprinter, long wheelbase and high top, purchased for ยฃ15,000, which was slightly over budget.
He spent about ยฃ30,000 on the van and its full build.
“The kids fell in love with it. They loved the color, and so did I,” he says.

The interior is carefully designed for daily life. Ellaโs bed is above the wheel arches, while Adrien and John have their own sleeping area across from her.
Partitions create privacy when needed. Storage is maximized with drawers and cupboards, and the kitchen features a Dometic fridge, gas hob, oven, sink, and deep tap, allowing John to cook meals safely.

The bathroom includes a Trino composting toilet and shower, connected to a Truma gas boiler that provides central heating and hot water.
Solar panels and a 460-amp Fogstar battery support off-grid travel.
Adrien emphasizes that every addition, from LED lights to roof racks, was chosen for both function and long-term independence.

Daily life and lessons from living close together
For Adrien, van life has transformed the way he spends time with his children.
“So many people have that lifestyle where they see their kids on a morning for half an hour screaming, ‘Get your shoes on!’โฆ Now I’m with them 24/7 and it’s wonderful,” he says.
He has noticed the twins blossom outside traditional schooling, socializing with like-minded children and exploring interests freely.
The family shares meals, plays, and studies together, fostering close bonds.
The van may be small, but it has created a rich environment for learning, connection, and independence.

Viewers on YouTube have praised Adrienโs choice.
One noted that he rebuilt his life, built a camper van, and single-handedly provides for two children, calling him “clever exactly where it matters.”
Another praised his lifestyle, saying, “You are living the dream.”
Critics offered perspective, too, suggesting the van may be limited to three people and may not offer the same opportunities for growth and social development as a home.
Adrien is clear about his philosophy.

“I want to be out of the systemโฆ I want them to realize that there is another world out there. Not listening to the newsโฆ you can just be who you want to be and do what you want to do,” he explains.
His focus is on presence, time with his children, and teaching them that life can be shaped according to values rather than expectations.

Life lessons from a single dad raising twins
Reflecting on their journey, Adrien says, “Definitely found what I was looking for. Watching the kids growโฆ it has given me headspace and time to let myself be me again.”
The lifestyle has brought financial simplicity, emotional freedom, and a sense of adventure.
The family hopes to continue traveling and may one day live off-grid entirely or even on a sailboat.
Adrien encourages other parents or anyone feeling trapped to explore alternatives.

“Hell yeah. You need to do it. Get out of that life because there’s a better world out thereโฆ until you’ve seen it, you just don’t know.”
