Experts say that you are highly intelligent if you have these 10 traits

When thinking of intelligent people, you might envision those who know facts or solve math problems swiftly. Yet, high intelligence isn’t solely about IQ.

Experts suggest it involves more, and many intelligent individuals underestimate their brilliance.

“A highly intelligent person is one who is flexible in their thinking and can adapt to changes; they think before they speak or act, and they’re able to effectively manage their emotions,” says Dr. Catherine Jackson, a licensed psychologist, and neurotherapist.

Simply put, they have various types of intelligence, such as intellectual, social, and emotional skills.

Researchers have studied the common traits of highly intelligent people.

For example, a 2016 British Journal of Psychology study revealed that smart individuals often prefer solitude. This preference is linked to lower life satisfaction when they socialize frequently.

Evolutionary psychology suggests that intelligence evolved to solve problems, making those happy alone more capable of facing challenges independently.

Meanwhile, being sociable doesn’t mean you lack intelligence; qualities like connecting well with others can also show intelligence.

According to Jackson, highly intelligent people often don’t recognize their intelligence.

Experts share several signs that you are a highly intelligent person:

1. You are a keen observer:

Intelligence isn’t always about being the most talkative in a group. According to Jackson, smart individuals often avoid boasting or insisting on their opinions.

They tend to be quiet and observant instead. This ability allows them to notice subtle patterns and details that others might miss.

2. You know your limits:

Highly intelligent individuals understand their limits and don’t feign knowledge.

They acknowledge they can’t do everything and are open to learning from others and diverse situations, fostering continuous growth.

“If they can’t do something they don’t try and act as if they can,” Jackson says.

3. You engage by asking meaningful questions and contributing to conversations:

Intelligent individuals ask purposeful questions and engage in meaningful conversations. They seek insights to understand their own thoughts and emotions better.

According to Andi Simon, a corporate anthropologist, they value the idea that asking the right questions is a hallmark of intelligence.

They recognize the importance of conversation, understanding that others’ perspectives can enrich everyone’s knowledge and wisdom.

4. You go with the flow:

The smartest people focus on what they can control and don’t worry about the rest.

Being flexible and adaptable suggests high intelligence, as it allows for quick problem-solving and adaptation to life’s challenges, according to Jackson.

5. You have a good memory:

“A good working memory and general intelligence is highly correlated,” Jackson says.

A good working memory indicates strong executive skills, good short-term memory, focus, and adaptability to switch between tasks smoothly.

6. You are curious:

People often assume that highly intelligent individuals love to read. Still, intelligence is more about curiosity than just reading many books.

According to Christine Scott-Hudson, a licensed psychotherapist, smart people explore their passions and ask many questions.

They enjoy learning about various topics, including people, cultures, and history. While a love of reading shows curiosity, it’s not the only sign of intelligence.

7. You can control yourself:

Self-control reflects maturity, allowing you to manage emotions and impulses to avoid problems.

Jackson says it’s a sign of intelligence because it encourages thoughtful responses.

These individuals quickly resolve the issue and reduce their unease when facing discomfort.

8. You are trusted:

It may indicate high intelligence if people trust your judgment and view you as a leader.

Simon notes that people follow smart individuals who can simplify tasks, motivate others, and celebrate successes.

A 2014 Oxford University study found that trust is crucial in society, linking it to positive outcomes like entrepreneurship, happiness, and intelligence.

Research shows that trust is often associated with intelligent leaders, making others more likely to follow them.

9. You put effort into learning things that interest you:

Highly intelligent individuals are marked by curiosity, passion, and a desire to learn.

Dr. Holly Schiff notes that they pursue their interests, admit when they lack knowledge and are eager to learn.

Their curiosity drives them to self-educate and gather information. When intrigued, they invest significant time and effort into learning more.

10. You have empathy and compassion:

“There’s a correlation between high emotional intelligence and high IQ in psychological assessments,” Scott-Hudson said. “We know that the higher a person scores in traits of empathy, the higher the person will score in traits of effective verbal comprehension.”

Empathy, a key aspect of emotional intelligence, and comprehension, part of cognitive intelligence, are closely intertwined.

Prioritizing empathy can also enhance performance in cognitive tasks, according to Scott-Hudson.
