Man turns awkwardly shaped limited space into a stunning tiny home with a nautical twist

Scott’s nautical design-inspired home is a beautiful blend of personal history, sustainable design, and creative flair.

Nestled by the beach, the home isn’t just a place to live—it reflects Scott’s journey and deep connection to the environment. Every part of the house tells a unique story, from recycled wood to nautical-themed details.

Reclaimed materials and thoughtful design

One of the standout features of Scott’s home is his use of reclaimed materials.

“I wanted to build a home that felt timeless, one that captured the charm of older homes while still being functional and modern,” Scott explains.

The house is filled with wood with a history of its own, like recycled rimu from an old building in Toonga and swamp kauri, which was preserved for thousands of years before being reclaimed.

Scott’s commitment to sustainability is clear in his choice of heating. He installed an Italian pellet fire using compressed wood chips that are 98% efficient.

“It’s just one of many details that make the home as practical as it is beautiful,” he says.

This eco-friendly fire minimizes the need for traditional firewood. It provides easy, effective warmth, adding comfort and environmental care to the home.

Maximizing space with smart features

Building a nautical design-inspired home in a smaller coastal space required Scott to get creative with the layout.

“When you live in a small space, you have to think outside the box,” Scott says.

Every inch of the home is designed to be functional, from hidden storage under the sectional sofa to custom shelves that use awkward spaces.

Even the kitchen, built in a strangely shaped area, demonstrates Scott’s ingenuity.

The kitchen counters are made from recycled subway tiles, with leftover pieces used for the vanity countertop.

“We had some odd cuts, but it worked out perfectly,” Scott recalls. “It’s about making the most of the materials you have and being creative with them.”

This thoughtful design ensures that every part of the house serves a purpose while maintaining an open, airy atmosphere.

The living room is another example of Scott’s efficient use of space. The large sectional sofa faces the ocean view. At the same time, hidden compartments beneath the seats offer storage for books, games, and other items.

The house may be small, but it’s packed with smart, practical features that make everyday life easier.

Nautical influences and personal touches

Scott’s years of living on a boat are evident throughout the house. Nautical touches are woven into the design, adding a playful and personal feel. A ship’s lamp hangs above the king-size bed in the master bedroom.

“It was a fun idea,” Scott says with a smile. “I wasn’t quite sure where I was going to put it, but above the bed felt just right.”

One of the most unique elements of the nautical design-inspired home is the “Rising Sun” design on the ceiling, which took Scott and a friend a full day to complete.

“It took a full day with two of us working just to do the cuts on the ceiling. But the result is something I’m really proud of,” Scott says.

The custom ceiling design adds a sense of personality and craftsmanship to the home.

The bunk beds, complete with portal windows and stairs, are another playful touch reflecting Scott’s creative design approach.

They serve as both sleeping spaces and a clever use of the available room. Every part of the house has a purpose, making the most of the limited space.

Perhaps the most charming feature is the hidden “Pirates treasure” compartment behind a mirror.

“It reflects my sense of humor,” Scott says. “When the mirror arrived, I thought, why not make it open to a secret compartment? We put in a note and some chocolate gold coins. It’s been discovered twice.”

A labor of love and a legacy for the future

For Scott, this smile is more than just a place to live. It’s a passion project, with every corner reflecting his love for design, sustainability, and family.

“It’s something I’m really proud of,” he says. “I didn’t know how it would all turn out at first, but the final result is beyond what I could have imagined.”

Building the home wasn’t easy, and Scott faced challenges, especially with costs.

“It was an expensive build. I really hated thinking about what the cost per square meter was,” he admits.

The final price, including professional fees and labor, came to about $200,000, not counting the land cost. But despite the financial strain, Scott never regretted his decision.

“I’ve never regretted a cent I’ve spent. The space is worth every bit of effort,” he says.

Scott hopes the house will be a lasting legacy for his daughter.

“This place means more to me than a big house on the beach. It encapsulates my history and my journey. It’s something I can leave her, and that’s priceless.”

While Scott built the house as a vacation retreat, he also shares it as an Airbnb. The tiny house movement has become increasingly popular, and guests come from all over to experience the space.
