A couple constructed a beautiful luxury treehouse to inspire artists. It showcases a mid-century modern style designed to adjust and showcase the magnificent trees supporting it.
The cozy treehouse is located near Mission Lake in Bremerton, Washington.
From there, you can see the big Olympic mountains, and it’s on land that belongs to the Squamish people.
It’s not too far from busy Seattle but a calm place.

The couple, Shawn and Jodi, wanted to make a special place for artists to feel happy and creative.
“We got the property to host artists in residents here. They stay for 3 weeks for free, get to do their work, and have studios and live-work spaces. That’s why we’re doing all of this,” said Jodi.
The Black Crane Treehouse symbolizes Shawn’s hard work and skills.
It took about ten months to build, and he ensured everything was done perfectly.

The treehouse’s height is restricted by the building code, set at 35 feet.
Shawn said he is a fan of midcentury modern architecture, so when he envisioned the treehouse, they aimed to break away from the usual norms.
It stands on three legs, with two sturdy trees, and is around a century old.
To meet safety regulations, a tower was added through the center to handle potential seismic activity.

However, it was initially disappointing to the builder. Nevertheless, they accepted it and continued with the project.
They had to follow the rules about building, but Shawn also found clever ways to make the treehouse eco-friendly.
“When you build something like a treehouse, you must do a lot of due diligence to ensure the project is viable. The building department here was super supportive, and they definitely made me respond to some issues in the design and engineering,” said Shawn.

“There’s Geotech to do, development, and runoff, and we jumped through those hoops,” he added.
Now, it’s a beautiful spot where artists can feel inspired by nature.
The cost: “Everything we had, everything we have, and everything we’re going to have!” Jodi laughed.
The Black Crane Treehouse is all about nature and feeling cozy.

Shawn made sure it felt like a safe place, inspired by the special bond between people and trees.
“Once we get into the trees, climbing as a kid or whatever you’re doing, there’s a calming effect and safety in that space. It can absorb any level of stress, take it away, and I think it impacts many people who come here. It’s a place that feels bigger than us.”
With strong old trees holding it up, the treehouse feels strong and in harmony with nature.

Making sure the treehouse stayed sturdy was really important to Shawn.
They used smart engineering tricks, like special bolts and flexible connections, to keep it strong even as the trees move and grow.
This way, the treehouse can last long, just like the trees it’s built around.
When you step inside the treehouse, you’ll feel part of nature. The walls are made of plywood, giving a cozy feel like being hugged by a tree.

Natural light fills the room through cleverly placed skylights, making everything look soft and magical.
The kitchen is the heart of the treehouse, with beautiful cabinets and dishes handmade by Jodi.
โOn this property, I have a pottery studio. I make ceramics. I do a lot of functional work that’s designed specifically for the Treehouse, but the whole kitchen is outfitted with my ceramics,” she said.

Each piece tells a story and connects to the land, inviting you to enjoy space’s artistry.
Whether it’s a mug for your morning coffee or a plate for dinner, every item adds to the treehouse’s charm.
You’ll notice a nice mix of balanced and unique touches inside the treehouse. The bed is placed under a big skylight, giving you a lovely view of the trees above.

It’s like sleeping under the stars, feeling close to nature.
The bathroom blends modern and natural elements, making it a peaceful place to unwind.
With cozy heated floors and a fancy heating system, comfort is key without hurting the environment.

Shawn ensured every part of the treehouse was eco-friendly, from layout to materials.
They wanted it to fit perfectly with its surroundings, showing respect for nature in every detail.
When you visit the Black Crane Treehouse, you’ll find a place where imagination comes alive and friendships are made.
From the peaceful lake nearby to the stunning mountain views, every part of the treehouse encourages you to appreciate nature’s beauty and express yourself creatively.
“The big game plan behind the Treehouse and behind the property is how to get more people feeling comfortable, confident, and driven towards their creative endeavors,” Shawn said.
