Bride asks if she’s wrong for refusing fiancé’s ex-girlfriend to give a speech at their wedding

A bride-to-be found herself under significant stress after her groom’s ex-girlfriend was asked to play a role in their wedding.

The request for the ex to give a speech created tension, leaving the bride uncomfortable and unsure of how to address the situation.

Adding to the pressure, her future mother-in-law pushed for the idea, while her fiancé offered little support.

The situation highlighted the challenge of balancing past relationships with the couple’s desire to make their special day about their happiness and comfort.

A bride-to-be sparked a discussion online after asking Reddit’s r/AITAH subreddit if she was justified in opposing her fiancé’s ex-girlfriend giving a speech at their wedding.

The post, shared on December 19, quickly gained attention.

Etiquette expert Jo Hayes from EtiquetteExpert.org weighed in on the matter, telling Newsweek that it’s reasonable for someone to feel uncomfortable with an ex-partner taking on such a significant role during their big day.

“I think the vast majority of humans would agree that this is not the time, or place, for such a speech, from such a person,” Hayes said.

A Redditor shared their discomfort over a request from their fiancé’s ex-girlfriend, Katy, to give a speech at their wedding.

Although “Katy” had remained close to the groom’s family after their breakup, the bride-to-be felt uneasy about her involvement.

The tension escalated when Katy asked to share “a few funny stories” about the groom during the ceremony.

While some accused the Redditor of being selfish, they stood firm, politely declining the request and explaining that it wouldn’t be appropriate.

The situation grew more tense when the future mother-in-law called the Redditor “negative” and accused them of making their wedding day “about me.”

Hayes disagreed with the mother-in-law’s stance, calling it “unfair.”

She emphasized that the couple should make decisions about speeches at a wedding, not by the mother-in-law or the groom’s ex-girlfriend.

Hayes emphasized that if a person getting married is uncomfortable with someone giving a speech, it’s reasonable for them to say no and stand firm in their decision.

The Redditor explained they didn’t want the groom’s ex-girlfriend, who was also a family friend and had known them since she was a teenager, to be involved in the wedding.

However, they now feel pressured to let her speak.

Meanwhile, other wedding guests have called the Redditor “oversensitive,” and the fiancé has decided to stay out of the issue, which Hayes said she found “surprising.”

Hayes recommended that the Redditor have an open and honest conversation with the groom, clearly expressing their feelings and the reasons behind them.

She also suggested that the couple politely but firmly explain to Katy that they are uncomfortable with her giving a speech at the wedding.

Lastly, Hayes urged Katy and the mother-in-law to respectfully accept the couple’s decision.

Other Redditors strongly supported the Redditor, with some saying it was inappropriate for Katy to speak at the wedding and urging the mother-in-law to stay out of it.

Many also encouraged the fiancé to step up and back their partner, with one commenter stressing, “Do not marry a man who doesn’t have your back.”

Others agreed, stating the decision should be straightforward: “In the end, it’s YOUR wedding, and you should make the final decision.”

One user speculated that the mother-in-law may have always expected her son and Katy to marry, making their breakup unexpected for her.

Another user suggested that the Redditor could agree to have the groom’s ex-girlfriend give a speech but, in return, invite one of their own exes to share “some fun stories” at the wedding.

Meanwhile, here is a short clip of a wedding where the bride’s ex-boyfriend gives a speech as their best man:
