Students surprise janitor with first vacation he’s had in almost a decade

When we talk about the people working behind schools and educational institutions, you will often hear people mention, teachers, professors, students, principal, administrators… yet only a number of times would you hear someone mention the people who keep our campus clean and spotless.

Today, students of the University of Bristol in England proved to the world that custodians and utility staff matter as well, by showing how much they love and respect one of their school janitors, Herman Gordon.

To others, Herman Gordon may simply be a janitor, but for the students of the University of Bristol, he is one of the loveliest custodians they have ever known. Due to his jolly, cheerful nature, and a good sense of humor, the students hailed him as a hero and a legend.

In fact, students even expressed their appreciation to Herman in an anonymous Facebook confession group known as “Bistruths.”

Despite always greeting the students with a smile and being known as the jolliest man to ever walk the school, the Jamaican janitor was not as happy as he seemed to be. Students were surprised when they found out that Herman had not seen nor spent time with his family in four years.

Fortunately, the students whose days Hernan cheered up felt that they needed to do something for the janitor they loved so dearly. Students organized a crowdfunding campaign for the jolly janitor.

Dozens of students responded well to the crowdfunding campaign and soon enough, they were able to raise an impressive amount of $2,000 from more than 230 donations, which is enough to afford Herman and his wife to return to Jamaica for a vacation.

After raising the money. the thoughtful students enveloped the cash and wrote a little note along with it. The message coming from the heart of the students was truly heartwarming.

“Dear Herman,

On behalf of the students at Bristol, we would like to thank you for all the positive energy you have given to us throughout the years. You have brightened many of our days and we want you to know that we love and appreciate you. We have come together to give you a special gift as our way of saying thank you. Have a lovely summer.

Much love,

Bristol Students”

The Jamaican janitor, Herman, sure was more than surprised when the students gave him their thoughtful gift. The students even captured his emotional reaction and posted the video on their Facebook group.

“We would like to thank everyone who contributed to this incredible gift,” the caption of the video reads. “It is truly amazing what we can achieve when we come together. It is thanks to your generosity that we’ve been able to raise about £1,500 – meaning both Herman and his wife will be able to visit Jamaica for the first time in 4 years!”

“You know, with a thing like this, you know that somebody loves you… I want to say thank you for everything you’ve done.” Herman said with tears of joy, overwhelmed with the gift he never thought would happen.

Truly, the story of the jolly janitor, Herman, and his thoughtful students offers a lot of thoughts to ponder. First, that money is not needed in order to uplift the lives of others; Second, that not all people who look happy on the outside, is truly happy; and third, that so much could be accomplished if we will work together.

The good news for this beloved janitor however didn’t stop with the students, Sandals Resorts a well known travel destination extended an offer to Gordon and his wife to stay at their luxurious hotel for two nights, a belated celebration for their 23rd anniversary.

Watch the emotional reaction of the Jamaican janitor as the students surprise him with the greatest gift of his life- compassion.
