The incredible power of social media is proven once again by the story below, where one tweet was all it took to make a Texas store owner smile.
On March 9, Billy By’s dad opened his donut shop in Missouri City, Texas. Boasting of newly painted sunny interiors, a “grand opening” tarpaulin displayed at the storefront, and most importantly, a colorful menu of scrumptious looking donuts, the shiny new store was ready to do business.
But a few hours after operations began, only a few customers showed up at Billy’s Donuts. Dismayed by the lack of people, Billy tweeted, “My dad is sad cause no one is coming to his new donut shop” followed by a crying emoji. Pictures of his dad all alone behind the counter, the empty parking lot, storefront with the grand opening banner, and glazed donuts came along with the tweet.
You guessed it right – the tweet tugged at people’s hearts and went viral, racking up a massive amount of retweets, likes, and comments. Within a few hours, customers began flocking to the shop!
And it looks like they don’t regret visiting the shop at all, one Twitter user even shared how good their kolaches were:
“Dude it was really busy when I went too!! His mom was talking about how she usually knows how much to make in a day but today she didnt expect the turnout … and the boudin kolaches are SO good.”
Kolaches are a type of Czech pastry that typically hold fruit or cheese, but the ones from Billy’s Donuts are stuffed with meat, which is a popular variety sold in Texas.
Replying to a tweet saying, “Take all ur friends. look at that sad dad. Look at that interior.”, another Twitter user shared pictures showing droves of customers lined up at the counter.
“I didn’t even need to cause the community came thruu”
That’s Twitter working its magic right there!
Billy tweeted again to reassure that Twitter indeed came through.
“Just wanted to update yall! We completely sold out of donuts and kolaches! You are all amazing. I can’t thank everyone enough for coming out and supporting local businesses. This means so much to my family.”
That tweet came along with a different picture – one of his dad beaming! A Twitter representative even visited the donut shop to congratulate them on their success.
According to Yelp, the donut shop was previously open at another location which is further down the highway. The store also had many positive reviews in the site going back years, so it could be that customers just needed to find their beloved shop’s new location.
Billy’s Donuts really delivered, they’ve even got 78 reviews on Yelp averaging five stars.
Below are some of the customer comments:
