Mourning dog won’t stop cuddling pillow of his brother who passed away

For a long and joyous decade, Spencer was never without his best friend Rocky. But in a tragic turn of fate, the latter had to be put down when doctors discovered that he had a deadly disease. As a dog mourning the loss of his buddy, Spencer found it hard to cope.

Seeing Spencer miserable is the last thing that his family wanted, so they found a way to lessen his pain by making sure that he feels that Rocky is still there with him, but this time, in spirit.

Rocky and Spencer were described by their owner as inseparable, and their greatest joy is simply being with each other.

“They had never spent a night apart. Rocky and Spencer slept in the same bed, ate from the same bowl and always walked together when they went out,” Beth Fisher, the dogs’ owner, told The Dodo.

Unfortunately, their 10 happy years of companionship recently came to an end.

During Rocky’s check-up with the vet for a sickness that he had developed, the doctors found a large cancerous tumor growing inside his body. As it was discovered too late, treatment wasn’t an option anymore. So Beth only had one choice to end Rocky’s suffering.

“Rocky had to get put down that day. It was hard to process Rocky’s sudden death, but we can’t imagine how hard it must be for Spencer to have lost his little brother,” Beth said.

Spencer was inconsolable, and his behavior manifested how heartbroken he was.

“Since Rocky passed, Spencer has been getting up in the night to wander the house looking for his brother. And then he starts crying because he can’t find him,” Beth said.

Rocky’s ashes were placed on a shelf above where the two dogs slept to keep them close to one another. But it was clear that the mourning dog needed something more to fill the void.

So Beth’s dad thought of buying something that might bring Spencer comfort – a pillow with Rocky’s face printed on it.In an instant, the family saw Spencer slowly feeling at ease. It seems like the pillow honoring Rocky has helped him cope with his best friend’s passing.

“Spencer has been cuddling into the pillow since it arrived, carrying it from the sofa to his own bed,” Beth said. “He seems a lot more settled now he’s got something to cuddle into.”

The mourning dog has a sleeping buddy once again.

Although nothing could replace Rocky’s physical presence, what’s important is that Spencer is reassured that his best friend is still with him in spirit.

“I don’t think Spencer will ever get over Rocky’s passing, but I hope he’s able to learn to go on without him,” Beth said.

For sure, with a loving family by his side, Spencer would never have to face the journey alone.
