Skin positivity is one of the popular and important movements today.
It is all about embracing the color of our skin and as well as its imperfections. It aims to empower both men and women to be comfortable with their own skin and feel beautiful.
Nyakim Gatwech, a South Sudanese model, is a good role model for people to not be afraid of their skin color, and rather, wear it with pride.
Breaking free from the conventional perception of beauty with her beautiful deeply dark pigmented skin and strong willpower, Nyakim has been teaching people not to be ashamed of their dark skin tones.
The blooming fashion icon, Nyakim is proud of her melanin and she makes sure that the world is aware of it.
In a 2017 Instagram post, Nyakim shared how she values her deeply colored skin, posting a photo of her with the quoted caption:
“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. My chocolate is elegant. So is what I represent. I represent a nation of warriors. You can see it in my presentation. MaMa Africa. My roots run deep!”
As usual, her photo garnered thousands of likes and supports from netizens.
Although with today’s advancement and progress, the color of our skin and our race should not be an issue anymore. However, not everyone is a fan of the beauty in diversity.
Nyakim shared on the internet how some people mistreated her merely due to the color of her skin. “You won’t believe the kind of questions I get and the kind of looks I get for having this skin.”
The model shared her memorable experience with an Uber driver. The driver asked the model if she would be willing to bleach her skin in exchange for 10,000 dollars.
Nyakim, who couldn’t answer his question, laughed instead. The Uber driver insisted on an answer, to which the black beauty finally answered:
“Hell to the f—king NO! Why on earth would I ever bleach this beautiful melanin God blessed me with.”
The insensitive Uber driver couldn’t believe what Nyakim said. He couldn’t understand why Nyakim sees her beautiful skin color as a gift from above. “My skin is who I am,” Nyakim captioned in a post.
Dubbed the Queen of the Dark, Nyakim is an ambassador for diversity in the fashion industry. “Black is bold, black is beautiful, black is gold… Don’t let American standards damage your African soul.”
Her message to her fellow people with beautiful pigmented skin sure is a good reminder to love and be proud of their skin. After all, beauty is not only defined by the color of our skin, there is beauty in diversity!
Each Nyakim’s gorgeous picture is matched with a proud caption, truly embracing her unique deeply pigmented color.
Her Instagram page has become her outlet platform for embracing colorism. It is where she celebrates her dark complexion while tackling racial and skin issues.
May Nyakim Gawetch is our inspiration in embracing diversity and who we are. She genuinely feels beautiful and no one and no standards can take away that feeling from her. May we stop trying to change the color we are born in, and start loving it.
Embrace who we truly are and be proud of it! As what Nyakim captioned in her photo, there is nothing more attractive than a woman comfortable in her own skin! You can follow Nyakim on her official Instagram page.

I think that how she views skin color and beauty is the way the world should adapt it’s standards…
