Believe it or not, the picture below is not photoshopped nor altered by any photo manipulation application. Featured in the photo is a gigantic turtle captured by a Detroit DJ named Robin Michael. According to the man who encountered the majestic being, it is “The biggest turtle I have ever seen!
Indeed, there is no sea turtle nor a reptile that can compare to the size of a giant leatherback turtle. In fact, leatherback sea turtles are among the world’s largest reptiles and the biggest sea turtle species. Adult giant leatherback turtle grow from 4 to 8 feet long and weigh between 500 and 2,000 pounds!
In addition, these gentle giants have roamed the deepest parts of the sea over 100 million years ago. They are the only remaining members of a species of seaturtle that has been around for more than 100 million years. Not only that, they are also the best divers of their specie, thanks to their leathery skin made up of a flexible matrix of bones!
Sadly, these truly majestic sea turtles are declining in number. Today, the giant leatherback turtle that used to populate all of the seven seas except for the Arctic and Antarctic ocean is now tagged as critically endangered.
Due to poaching and sea pollution, there is roughly around 15,000 – 40,000 giant leatherback sea turtle remaining in the world. Because of their declining number, their rarity is also what makes them such a majestic sight today.
Thus, one DJ from Detroit named Robin Michael is very lucky to have a close encounter with the gentle giant in one of his travel adventures.
In the captured video, the lucky Detroit Dj witnessed in amazement a giant leatherback turtle sitting in the sand. Struck with awe, he whipped out his camera to record the wonderful sight before him. The majestic giant reptile used its flippers to crawl back to the sea, after laying its eggs.
Between a few forceful pushes and a brief pause once in a while, the giant leatherback turtle finally reached the crashing waves and pushed itself into the sea until it was out of sight.
The surreal sight that was captured in the video was posted in Facebook by the Detroit DJ. Soon after, it garnered over thousand views and reactions that it became viral!
Facebook users who have seen the the video expressed their amazement on the comment section of the video.
“Look how big this sea turtle is!” Allysa Muha, a Facebook user, exclaimed in delight and tagged someone she knew to witness the video as well.
“I’m just so impressed by how big this turtle is.” Lauren Sharp Keppler, another Facebook user, expressed.
“Those people on the beach were so lucky to see this.” Jane Cabanagh, a Facebook user as well, stated, hoping she could see the majestic sight as well.
