Britney Tankersley’s son, Myles, had planned to wear matching clothes with one of his classmates for their school’s “Twin Day”. However, due to the fact that the five-year-old informed her so late – at 8:00 p.m., Britney felt a bit annoyed.
Aside from having no idea which classmate Myles was talking about, she didn’t have any matching clothes in their house for the two boys to wear the next day.
After an hour of searching, Britney was able to contact the boy’s mother. Once all her children were asleep, she made a trip to Walmart near their home in Alabama to purchase two “Future Leader” button-downs for the two kindergartners, describing it as “the only decent shirts left” in their sizes.
“He went on and on about how they looked exactly the same,” she told TODAY. “‘We both have brown eyes, we both have dark hair,’ and he was just adamant … so I head to Walmart and I’m like, irritated. I’m like, this is too late. I’m too old for this.”
Britney sent off her son to school the next morning and before she left, she asked his teacher if she’d be able to take a photo of Myles and his twin – a kid she was still unfamiliar with.
Since Myles was “adamant” that he looked identical with his classmate, Britney wanted to see for herself how much resemblance they had.
The teacher took the photograph and sent it over to Britney. Upon seeing it, the mother was left in tears.
Contrary to what she was expecting, the kid whom Myles considered as his “twin” didn’t actually look like him. Instead, the boy – named Tanner – had black hair and brown skin.
“I was basically crying because it was so sweet,” Britney said. “Obviously, I know that they don’t look alike at all. But he didn’t see that, you know?
I expect to get a picture of another white child with light skin and brown hair, whatever, but I didn’t get that at all. And I said ‘That is the sweetest thing in the whole world.'”
Britney shared the photo of the boys donning their matching clothes on her Facebook and it immediately went viral. As of writing, it has garnered 447,000 reactions and 239,000 shares.
“It’s so crazy,” she said. “My objective is never to be in the spotlight, but I think the message is more important than how much it exploded.”
Now, Myles and Tanner are “the best of buddies,” according to Britney. The good thing is that the two live just a few minutes away from each other, so their families were able to bond since Twin Day.
“All the teachers at school are so excited,” Britney added. “There’s always a lot of kids that dress up that don’t look alike, but this was unique. I was kind of put in my place because I was expecting to see something totally different, and that’s not what it was at all.”
If we were all to have a non-judgmental heart such as this little guy, the world would surely be a much sweeter place to live in.
