Employee is unaware her act of kindness towards elderly man is captured by customer

What do you do when no one’s looking? You probably just mindlessly continue with your daily routine – monotonously going about what you normally do. But what do you do when you know someone’s observing your actions? Do you do things differently? Do you try to do things a little better than you normally would?

It was just an ordinary day at work for Evoni Williams, an 18-year-old employee at Waffle House in La Marque, Texas. The place was busy, as usual.

Then, one of the customers, a 78-year-old man named Adrien Charpentier, reached out to her asking for a little assistance with his food. Apparently, Adrien has difficulty using his hands and he’s unable to cut his food.

The restaurant was packed with customers and there’s a lot of things to do, but Evoni didn’t mind and didn’t hesitate – she helped the man.  She had no idea that her little act of kindness was noticed by another customer, Laura Wolf. Laura immediately shared this heartwarming story on Facebook:

Laura said that what Evoni did meant something to her, and evidently, people were touched by what Evoni did, too, because the story has spread over the internet real quick.

And what Evoni regarded as just a simple action that wasn’t special, became the key to a brighter future for her.

What she did came to the attention of Texas Southern University, who awarded her with a $16,000 scholarship. It was reported that Evoni was working full-time at the restaurant to save up money so she can go to college. Texas Southern University has already assigned a councilor for Evoni to help her with the enrollment.

And the blessings didn’t stop there. The mayor of La Marque, Texas, also declared March 8th as Evoni Williams Day – in honor of the kindhearted employee.  In an interview with KHOU 11, Evoni said that she didn’t do anything special, and that what she did for Adrien was something she would do any other day.

Just the fact that Evoni believes what she did was not something extraordinary proves one thing about her – she’s genuinely kind that helping others is something she does naturally and something she’s accustomed to. In an interview with ABC, the teenager said that she was raised to help people and try to give blessings.

It’s a bit sad, but the truth is, in this day and age where almost everyone’s busy doing their own thing, not everyone would have stopped to help and give Adrien the assistance he needed, that’s why the action of the employee stood out.

Evoni was raised by parents who instilled something in her that no amount of school education could ever teach – kindness without expecting anything in return. And it truly is something we should be teaching our children as well – more than academic stuff, more than achieving success.

She has shown kindness, even when no one’s looking – or so she thought. And that’s enough to reveal what kind of person she is.
