Photographer captures hilarious expressions of dogs trying to catch treats in mid-air

According to a study published in the journal Psychological Science, people who smiles after a stressful work have a reduced rate of stress and anxiety than people who do not smile at all. And it doesn’t have to be a genuine smile, even faking a smile can do the same trick.

Sarah Pressman, the co-author of the study and an assistant psychology professor at University of California, Irvine explained what it is about the mere act of smiling that makes a big impact on our mental and physical well-being.

“We smile because we feel not threatened,” Dr. Pressman said. Apparently when we are smiling, this sends a message to our brain that means we are safe. In return, our heart rate and stress levels decline.

Since the year 2013, Chrisitan Vieler has been taking amusing photos of dogs catching or missing their treats midair. What inspired him to start the unusual but smile inducing photo collection was none other than his dog as well.

“To make her move and in order to test the ‘freezing options’ of the flash, I started throwing treats at her,” Vieler explained. “Days later, when I cleaned my hard drive, I noticed how funny the shots were.”

“I asked myself: What is the magic behind these photographs? I think the expressions of the dogs remind us of well-known feelings like desire, loss, pain or joy. And that’s what we normally don’t see that clear in the faces of our dogs.” The German photographer further explained.
