Meet Des Monahan, an 84-year-old man from Waterford learning how to do makeup not just for the fun of it, but for a very special reason.

His wife of 56 years, Mona, 83, is starting to lose her vision. Her left eye has gone really bad, making it impossible for her to do some things for herself – including applying her own makeup. Plus, she can’t hold things properly anymore because she has a lot of shaking in her hands.

Thankfully, her devoted husband knew just what to do.

Knowing that Mona loved to wear makeup, Des took makeup lessons from a local branch of Debenhams so he could do it for her himself. Des wants to make sure that his lady will still feel fabulous despite her deteriorating eyesight.

It all began when a birthday party came up, and Mona decided that she would get her face done up for the occasion. That’s when they met make-up artist Rosie O’Driscoll. Des was telling her about Mona’s worsening eyesight while she was doing her makeup when suddenly, he took the brushes from her hand and tried doing his wife’s makeup himself.

Rosie said that Des was a “natural” with the way he holds the brushes. That’s when Des’ makeup lessons with Rosie began.

His heartwarming gesture came to the attention of Kim Kardashian’s make-up artist, Mario Dedivanovic. He was so touched by their story, that he told his manager, “I want those two at my masterclass in London”. So they went, and they met Mario in the flesh.

“It’s an effort for me to even realize how big it was. Makeup, Mario, the Kardashians and that. Absolutely nothing in our lives, up until now,” Mona said of what happened.

If there is one thing about makeup that Des and Mona agree on, it’s that “less is more”.

“There’s no way that I want my lovely Mona slapped up with stuff,” Des said during their BBC interview.

And that’s because he thinks Mona is lovely as she is.

Truly, love is really in the small things. Des and Mona are very fortunate to have found their biggest supporter and friend in each other – remaining so even if they have been married for almost six decades.
